Roy Dickison has had a long association with the New Zealand Art Society. From 1970 Roy was a member then later began a three year term as president. In 1982 Roy was elected a life member.
Recognition of his teaching ability led to his appointment as Head of Otago Polytecnic School of Art in 1970.
After his retirement to Queenstown in 1982 the time to travel and paint became a pleasant reality.
In April 1985 Roy and his wife made a trip to Japan to spend 5 weeks with their eldest son John, a qualified architect, working in Tokyo.
Living with his son's family, meeting Japanese people and learning the language, was the right introduction to inspire painitng.
Twelve paintings "A Japanese Interlude" are the result of his visit. Depicting the Japanese way of life, a busy street scene, the colourful market place, hanging shop signs, cherry blossom and architecture of temples are subjects which have captivated the artist.
Roy's observations are by pen and wash and watercolour, a technique in which he has distinguished recognition.
